Choosing Among the Types of Cruises for Families
Children change what matters. With little ones, a short sailing from a port you can drive to avoids flights and keeps routines close to home. With teens, a big ship’s water slides, sports courts and teen club may be what wins them over. When grandparents come too, look for a ship where everyone can find their own corner and still meet for dinner.
School calendars set the dates for most families, which is also when ships are busiest and fares are highest. Booking early widens the choice of cabins, especially for families who need connecting rooms or cabins for four or five.

For first-time families, First Time Cruise walks through the whole process, and Cruising Checklist has packing lists to share with the kids.
Family Cruise Types by Age
Babies and toddlers
Lines differ on the minimum age to sail and on nursery services. Short sailings close to home are the easiest start.
Ages 3 to 11
Kids’ clubs do the heavy lifting; check the age bands and whether children must be toilet-trained.
Teens
Look for a dedicated teen space, sports and water slides, and some independence on board.
Grandparents along
Choose a ship with quiet corners and easy access between cabins, dining and the theater.
Adult children
Reunions and milestone trips often suit a cabin block with one shared dinner each night.
Booking Tips for Families
- Ask about fares for third and fourth guests in the same cabin before booking two cabins.
- Check passport or birth certificate rules for children well before sailing.
- Reserve kids’ club times or popular activities as soon as the line allows.
- Plan at least one sea day with nothing scheduled.
